After weeks on the road, Acacia Caravan Park felt like the right place to pause, reset, and explore a part of Victoria we’d only ever driven through. What surprised us most was how quickly the park felt familiar — friendly owners, tidy grounds, and little touches like the gnome garden that made each walk feel like a treasure hunt.

Check‑in was a breeze. Reception is small but surprisingly well stocked — drinks (including alcohol at very reasonable prices), snacks, souvenirs, and a few essentials. The whole place has that “looked after” feel that instantly puts you at ease.
Exhale Moment 😌
For us, it was that first warm evening after setting up — sitting outside on the grass, watching the light fade behind the trees, and feeling the breeze drift through the park. The day had been long, the kilometres many, and the to‑do list endless… but in that moment, everything slowed down. Even the occasional freight train couldn’t spoil it. It was simple, grounding, and exactly the pause we needed.

Big Van Friendliness 🚛
Acacia Caravan Park is well laid out for larger vans. Internal roads are wide, turning circles are generous, and the grassy sites offer plenty of room to manoeuvre without stress. Access from the main road is straightforward, and there’s enough space to position even a long van comfortably. If you’re travelling with a big rig, you’ll find this park easy to get in and out of.

The Sites 🌳
We loved our grassy site — even if it sat on a gentle slope that meant the levelling blocks came out. Pretty normal for regional parks, and once we were set up, it was perfect.
Here are a few details worth noting:

Good to Know 🔊
Acacia sits beside the train line, and a freight train passes around 11pm each night. On the other side of the line is the Western Highway, so you’ll also hear trucks slowing into town overnight.
Ian (light sleeper): needed earplugs. Pauline: slept through everything.
If you’re noise‑sensitive, come prepared. If you’re not, you’ll barely notice it.

The reception area is surprisingly well stocked with drinks (including alcohol at very reasonable prices), snacks, souvenirs, and a few essentials. It’s the sort of spot you pop into for one thing and walk out with three.
The quirky gnome and ornament garden near our site became a daily highlight. Every walk revealed something new, and it added a bit of charm you don’t often see in parks this size.
The park’s layout gives it an open, relaxed feel, and even when it was close to full, it never felt crowded or noisy.

The camp kitchen is enclosed, clean, and genuinely pleasant to use — especially on cooler evenings. It’s well equipped and feels like a space travellers actually enjoy spending time in.

Permanent Vans 🏘️
This park has no permanent vans, which gives the whole place a clean, open feel. Every site is dedicated to travellers, and the vibe stays relaxed and consistent.
Food & Drink 🍽️
Ararat turned out to be a great little food town. We tried both pubs and found generous meals and friendly service — proper country hospitality. The bakery quickly became a repeat stop, and the pastries and coffee were consistently good.
We also found a fantastic noodle shop that served fresh, flavourful dishes perfect after a long day of exploring. The Indian restaurant wasn’t our favourite, and with only one of each in town, it’s easy to work out which is which. Supermarkets, servos, and bottle shops are all close by, making it an easy place to stock up or grab a quick bite.
Exploring the Region 🚗
With ten days to play with, we mixed short local outings with a full Grampians day trip. These were the highlights that stood out for us.
Grampians Day Trip 🏞️
We spent a full day exploring Boroka Lookout, Reed Lookout, The Pinnacles, and Lake Bellfield. We missed Mackenzie Falls and Zumsteins due to maintenance work, but the drives through the mountains were still spectacular.
One Tree Hill Lookout 🌄
Just a couple of minutes from the park, this lookout delivers breathtaking sunset views over Ararat and the surrounding ranges.
J Ward Guided Tour & Museum 🏛️
A guided tour through the former prison for the criminally insane — fascinating, confronting, and deeply memorable.
Aradale Lunatic Asylum Ghost Tour 👻
A night‑time torchlight tour through a massive abandoned asylum, blending history, atmosphere, and a few fun jump scares.
Museums & Gardens 🌿
Gum San Chinese Heritage Museum, Langi Morgala Museum, and Alexandra Gardens all offered something different and worthwhile during our stay.
There’s genuinely plenty to keep you busy in and around Ararat.
A classic Grampians lookout — sweeping views across the valley, forest and lake.
Lake Bellfield — a peaceful spot with great views and easy access from Halls Gap.
J Ward — a fascinating and confronting look into Victoria’s darker history.
Aradale at sunset — atmospheric, eerie and full of stories.
A warm Ararat sunset — the perfect way to end a day of exploring.
