After a long, hot 450‑kilometre haul from Roxby Downs — the kind of drive where every roadside stop meant being mobbed by flies the second we opened the doors — walking into the cool, air‑conditioned reception at Stuart Range Outback Resort felt like stepping into another world. A genuine smile, a warm welcome, and a manager who actually took the time to understand our stay… it set the tone for what turned out to be one of our favourite outback bases.

Where Is It? 📍

Stuart Range Outback Resort sits on Hutchison Street, just a couple of minutes from the centre of Coober Pedy. It’s close enough to town for fuel, groceries and attractions, but far enough away to feel calm and spacious — especially during quieter travel periods. It’s an ideal base for exploring the opal fields, underground homes and the rugged outback landscapes that make Coober Pedy so unique.

Exhale Moment 😮‍💨

Stepping out of the car after that long, hot drive and walking into the cool reception was one of those small but powerful outback moments — the kind where your shoulders drop, the heat lifts, and you realise you’ve landed somewhere that’s going to look after you. Clarissa’s warm welcome sealed it. In a place as harsh as Coober Pedy, that kind of hospitality hits differently.

First Impressions 👀

By the time we rolled into Coober Pedy, I was cooked. Big drive days aren’t my favourite, but sometimes the map gives you no choice. The heat was sitting in the low‑to‑mid 30s, the flies were doing their best to break my spirit, and I was absolutely done.

Then the reception doors slid open.

Cool air. A friendly smile. And Clarissa — the kind of manager who actually cares.

She didn’t just check us in. She talked through the park layout, the pros and cons of each area, and what would work best for a six‑night stay (which is definitely not the norm here). Her warmth and genuine interest in making our stay comfortable instantly lifted the weight of the day.

It was one of the best check‑in experiences we’ve had anywhere.

The Sites 🌳

Thanks to the fuel crisis, the park was unusually quiet — which meant we had almost the entire back section to ourselves. We ended up on Site 20, but honestly, we could have thrown a frisbee in any direction and not hit another van.

Space is one thing. Outback space is another.

The sites are large, level and well‑laid‑out, with plenty of room even if the park were full. Shade is rare out here, so having power for the air‑con was a blessing.

And the real surprise? A water hookup — almost unheard of in Coober Pedy.

Big Van Friendliness 🚛

Stuart Range is built for big rigs.

Wide internal roads, generous turning circles and huge site footprints make manoeuvring easy. Even the largest vans would have no trouble getting in or out.

Water in Coober Pedy 💧

Water is a big deal here.

Coober Pedy’s water costs over $14 per kilolitre — compared to around $2/kL in Brisbane. It’s produced from a bore and then put through a reverse osmosis system, which makes it some of the best‑tasting water in the outback.

Because of the cost, most powered sites don’t have water hookups. Travellers usually fill their tanks at the water point (included in your stay) and use onboard water for their one‑ or two‑night stopover.

But because we were staying six nights, we were placed on one of the rare water‑connected sites. We were extremely frugal with our use — partly out of respect, partly because you can’t not be aware of how precious water is out here.

It’s a quirky system, but once you understand the why, it makes perfect sense.

Amenities & Facilities 🚿

For a remote outback park, Stuart Range delivers far more than you’d expect. Both amenity blocks were spotless every day of our stay — genuinely impressive given the dust, heat and constant movement of travellers through Coober Pedy. Showers had good pressure, plenty of hot water, and the blocks were well‑maintained throughout the day.

The dump point is easy to access, even with a larger van, and the layout of the park means you’re never too far from facilities no matter where you’re parked.

The camp kitchens are a standout. There are two — one indoor, one outdoor — and both are exceptionally well set up. The indoor kitchen has full cooking facilities, loads of bench space, a lounge area and a TV. It’s not air‑conditioned, so it’s best later in the day, but it’s a comfortable, practical space. The outdoor kitchen is shaded, breezy and perfect for cooking when the heat hasn’t quite let go.

The laundry is modern, clean and uses tap‑and‑go machines (no coins — bliss). There are plenty of washers and dryers, and everything worked perfectly during our stay.

Overall, the facilities here feel cared for — and that makes a huge difference when you’re this far from anywhere.

Pool 🏊‍♀️

This pool is an absolute oasis.

Clean, clear water. Plenty of seating. Soft, green fake grass underfoot that makes the whole area feel inviting.

In a town where water is so expensive that lawns simply don’t exist, this pool feels like a luxury. On hot days — and with the flies doing their best to test your patience — it’s the perfect place to cool off and reset.

Food & Drink 🍕

Stuart Range punches well above its weight when it comes to food and drink.

• A bar opens late afternoon, complete with happy hour.
• An on‑site pizza restaurant serves genuinely good pizzas.
• Indoor and outdoor seating gives you options depending on the heat and the flies.
• A well‑stocked souvenir shop offers cold drinks, ice creams, snacks and a wide range of gifts.

After dark, when the flies finally bugger off and the temperature drops, the outdoor seating becomes a lovely place to unwind.

Noise & Vibe 🔊

Quiet. Relaxed. Spacious.

The fuel crisis meant fewer travellers on the road, so the park felt calm and open during our stay. Even when full, the generous site spacing would still give everyone room to breathe.

This is a park where you can genuinely settle in and exhale.

A huge part of that was the people. Clarissa, Jarrad and Amelia made our stay genuinely memorable — warm, helpful, and the kind of hosts who make you feel looked after from the moment you arrive. In a place as harsh and remote as Coober Pedy, that kind of hospitality stays with you.
