Capella Van Park, Capella QLD — No Bells and Whistles, Just Everything You Need

Capella Van Park is worth the stop — no question. It’s a simple, no-frills country park that gives you everything you need, and after three nights we’d pull in again without hesitation.

We towed Sunny in behind Ernie along the Great Inland Way, that quiet stretch between Emerald and Clermont. It was quiet when we arrived, so Jodi waved us straight onto our site — a big grassed spot with a concrete slab, easy as.

There’s nothing flashy about this place, and that’s exactly the point. Clean amenities, a nightly fire, a cool pool for the afternoons — just a small country town park doing the simple things well.

Where Is It? 📍

Capella sits on the Great Inland Way in the Central Highlands, roughly halfway between Emerald and Clermont. It’s a small working town in the Peak Downs mining district, and Capella Van Park is right in the middle of it — an easy pull-in whether you’re passing through or planning a proper stop.

Exhale Moment 😌

The plan had been a few quiet nights off grid before Mackay — until a leaking water tank put a stop to that. We needed somewhere with a hook-up, and Emerald just felt too big and too busy for what we wanted.

Capella turned out to be exactly right. We drove straight onto our site, unhitched, and were set up within 15 minutes — a proper exhale after a longish drive and a complete change of plans.

First Impressions 🚙

The entrance sign told us everything we needed to know before we’d even parked — pool, BBQ, kiosk, ice, gas, all the basics covered. A “STOP, all visitors park here” sign kept things simple for anyone just calling in.

Jodi met us at the office and had us on our site in minutes. The chalkboard out front already had happy hour chalked up for 5pm — bring a chair, walk-ups welcome.

It’s a no-fuss operation, and that suited us fine after the day we’d had.

The Sites 🏕️

The sites are large, grassed and simple — no fuss, no tight squeezes. Ours came with a concrete slab to park Sunny on, plenty of grass either side, and enough shade from the surrounding trees to take the edge off a Central Queensland afternoon.

Big Van Friendliness 🚐

We drove straight onto our site and unhitched Sunny within minutes — no tight turns, no reversing dramas. The internal roads are wide and the sites long enough that manoeuvring a big rig isn’t an issue here.

Exploring the Park 🐾

There’s more happening inside this little park than you’d expect. The fire pit is provided and lit every night, but it’s BYO chairs — we set up our trusty Darche Rover Recliners and settled in with a drink, chatting to whoever else wandered over. It’s a relaxed, easy way to meet your neighbours and wind down at the end of the day.

A pair of handmade scrap-metal birds stand guard in one of the garden beds — the kind of quirky, homemade touch you only find in parks run by people who actually love the place. There’s also a proper book and DVD exchange, a cooling pool for the warmer afternoons, and a covered stage with a sign reading “bring ya song along” for anyone keen to have a go during happy hour.

None of it is flashy. All of it adds up to a park with more personality than its size suggests.

Food & Drink 🍔

There’s no on-site kiosk meal or café here, just a simple, functional camp kitchen — a communal fridge, BBQ and prep bench, nothing fancy but everything you need for a quick meal.

For a hot feed without cooking, the Ampol service station is an easy walk from the park. It’s open 6am–8pm Monday to Friday and 8am–8pm on weekends, with a surprisingly good hot box selection plus made-to-order options.

Exploring the Region 🌄

Capella itself is small, but there’s more nearby than you’d expect. The Pioneer Village opens Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday and is worth a wander for the old machinery and local history, and the town’s painted light pole murals are a fun, free wander if you’re stretching your legs after a long drive. If you’ve got a bit more time up your sleeve, the Sapphire Gemfields are within reach for a spot of fossicking.

• Travellers wanting resort-style facilities or on-site dining
• Those after a big-town base with lots to see and do within the park itself

Capella Van Park wasn’t part of the plan, but it turned out to be exactly what we needed. A leaking water tank changed our route, and this simple little country park gave us three easy, relaxed nights to reset before pushing on to Mackay.

There’s nothing flashy about it — grassed sites, clean amenities, a nightly fire and a genuinely friendly welcome from Jodi. Sometimes that’s all you need.

We’d stay again without a second thought, and if you’re passing through the Central Highlands on the Great Inland Way, it’s well worth pulling in.
