Sometimes, the best caravan parks are the ones that don’t fit a conventional mould. After exploring parts of Central Queensland, we found ourselves heading towards Mount Morgan, a town steeped in rich gold mining history.
Our destination, Silver Wattle Caravan Park and Cottage, promised a unique stay, and it certainly delivered on that front. It’s the kind of place that captures the quirky charm of a bygone era, perfectly complementing the historic town it calls home.
From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the friendly faces of hosts Dave and Debbie, whose warm welcome immediately set the tone for our three-night stay. The park itself is nestled on the side of a steep(ish) hill, which might give some Big Rig owners some nerves.
However, we quickly discovered that the good quality, well-maintained internal roads meant there was absolutely no issue getting our 21ft 6 caravan, Sunny, in and around the park. It’s places like this that truly test a park’s Big Rig Friendly claims, and Silver Wattle passed with flying colours, thanks in no small part to Dave’s expert guidance during parking.

While there are two roads into Mount Morgan, both involve crossing a small mountain range, but these roads are in good condition and are not overly steep or winding, even for large rigs like our Ford Everest towing Sunny.

Silver Wattle Caravan Park has unusual office hours of 11 am to 7 pm. If you plan to arrive earlier, it’s always best to call Dave or Debbie ahead of time. While the internal roads are good for Big Rigs, arriving during office hours ensures you get that expert guidance for parking Sunny.
The Camping Experience
Silver Wattle Caravan Park, despite its hillside location, offers a comfortable and welcoming camping experience. The sites are predominantly grass, providing a soft landing for your rig and a pleasant feel underfoot. While the parking method is Reverse-In Only, we found that the guidance from host Dave was invaluable. He’s an expert at directing even the largest vans, making what could have been a challenging reverse into a straightforward process.
Once Sunny was perfectly positioned, we appreciated the park’s quiet atmosphere. The terraced layout on the hillside provides a sense of seclusion, and the overall ambience is one of peace and relaxation. It might be a small park, but its charm and facilities more than make up for its modest size. It truly feels like a hidden gem.
Amenities & Facilities
For a park with such a quirky, rustic charm, the amenities at Silver Wattle Caravan Park are surprisingly modern and impeccably maintained. The bathrooms are spotless, a testament to Dave and Debbie’s dedication to cleanliness. Having clean and functional facilities always makes a big difference to our caravanning experience.
In addition to the excellent ablutions, the park offers a well-equipped laundry facility, an absolute necessity for travellers on the road.
But the true star of the show is the incredible camp kitchen. It’s not just a camp kitchen; it’s a fully decked-out communal space with everything you could possibly want, including a fantastic pizza oven. This creates a wonderful social hub, inviting campers to gather, cook, and share stories.
Mount Morgan: A Golden History
Mount Morgan isn’t just a picturesque Queensland town; it’s a living museum of Australia’s gold mining past. The Mount Morgan Gold Mine was one of the richest gold mines in the world, operating from its discovery in 1882 until its eventual closure in the 1980s (with final open-pit operations ceasing in the 1990s).
Discovered by the three Morgan brothers, the mine was incredibly productive, ultimately yielding an astonishing 225 tonnes of gold, 50 tonnes of silver, and 360,000 tonnes of copper.
The sheer scale of operations involved early open-cut methods followed by extensive underground workings, transforming the local landscape. The mine’s history is also marked by significant human effort and tragedy, including a devastating fire in 1908 that claimed 10 lives, and an explosion in 1930 that killed three miners. Today, the remnants of this industrial giant stand as a powerful reminder of Queensland’s golden era.

- Arthur Timms Lookout: Provides a panoramic view over the enormous open-cut mine site, offering a sobering perspective on the scale of the past operations.
- The Mount Morgan Cemetery: This cemetery is full of intriguing historical gravestones that tell the stories of early settlers and miners. It is also home to a significant and moving memorial to the local Bayali indigenous people, acknowledging the traditional custodians of this land. We highly recommend a visit to pay your respects and learn more, but factor in plenty of time – we left it late and had to rush, as the gate closes at 3 pm.
