After navigating the long, straight stretches of Queensland’s interior, the sight of a welcoming, peaceful bush camp is always a relief. As we continued our adventures through Queensland, seeking out truly Big Rig Friendly locations, we landed at Charleville Bush Caravan Park and Cottage, and it quickly became one of our favourites.

Pulling off the main sealed road, we bumped gently along the short dirt access track leading into the park. It instantly felt like coming home. The expansive bush setting, the quiet hum of nature, and the promise of three nights of undisturbed peace immediately washed away the kilometres.

Sunny, our 21ft 6 caravan, always enjoys stretching out, and this park promised ample space. It was clear from the outset that this wasn’t just a stopover; it was an experience in itself, offering genuine Outback hospitality from the moment we arrived.

If you appreciate space and serenity, Charleville Bush Caravan Park delivers. We found the sites here to be absolutely enormous, a dream come true for anyone travelling with a large rig like Sunny.

All the sites are drive-through, which means no stressful reverse parking maneuvers – a huge bonus for Big Rig Friendly caravanners.

The site surfaces are predominantly grass, which adds to the natural, comfortable atmosphere. There’s plenty of room to spread out, deploy your awning, and truly feel like you have a piece of the bush to yourselves.

The generous spacing between sites ensures privacy and quiet, allowing you to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings without feeling cramped. It’s the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to stay an extra night (or two!).

Amenities & Facilities

While the park offers a bush experience, it doesn’t skimp on essential comforts. The amenities block, though compact, houses spotless bathrooms that are meticulously maintained. Considering the park has 36 sites, the facilities handle the capacity well, always clean and well-stocked during our stay.

In addition to the excellent toilet and shower facilities, the park provides a laundry, which is always a lifesaver on an extended trip, and a well-equipped camp kitchen for those who prefer to cook away from their van.

Perhaps the true highlight of the evenings is the nightly campfire. Mat, the owner, builds an enormous blaze and invites all campers to gather around. These sessions are a fantastic opportunity to share stories, meet fellow travellers, and enjoy genuine Outback yarns under the vast Queensland sky. It’s this personal touch that truly sets the park apart.

There are no food or cafe services directly available at Charleville Bush Caravan Park and Cottage. However, the town of Charleville is just a short drive away and offers various dining options, from local pubs serving hearty meals to cafes and takeaway outlets for a quick bite.

Things to Do in Charleville

Charleville is brimming with Outback history, science, and quirky attractions. We found ourselves with plenty to keep us busy during our three-night stay:

Charleville Cosmos Centre: A must-visit for anyone fascinated by the night sky. Experience stunning stargazing and learn about the universe.
WW2 Secret Base and Tour: We took this tour and it was absolutely fantastic! It’s a surprisingly engaging and insightful look into Charleville’s role during World War II.
Outback Date Farm: A unique local experience where you can learn about date farming in the Outback.
Charleville Historic House Museum: A great collection showcasing local history. We particularly enjoyed it, though we left our visit a bit late and had to rush as it closes at 3 pm. Plan your visit earlier in the day to fully appreciate it.

Charleville Bush Caravan Park and Cottage is a standout gem in Outback Queensland. It perfectly balances a serene bush setting with excellent, clean facilities and genuine hospitality.

For anyone travelling with a Big Rig like Sunny, the huge, drive-through sites are a massive bonus, offering unparalleled ease of access and space.

We loved the peaceful atmosphere and the unique social experience of Mat’s nightly campfire. It’s an authentic Outback stay we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.
